From Garden to Vase: The Beauty and Versatility of Echinacea in Floral Design

As told by Constance Spry

As an avid lover of all things floral, I have always been drawn to the unique beauty of Echinacea. With its bold and striking petals and long-lasting blooms, it's no wonder why this plant has become a popular choice in many floral designs.

In my book, "Flower Decoration," I talk about the importance of using flowers that are in season and readily available in your garden. Echinacea is the perfect example of a plant that can easily transition from the garden to a vase. Whether used alone or in combination with other flowers and foliage, it adds texture, color, and height to any arrangement.

One of my favorite ways to use Echinacea in floral design is to pair it with other blooms in similar shades of pink, purple, and white. It creates a cohesive and harmonious look that is both striking and elegant. I also love using Echinacea to add texture to more delicate blooms, such as roses or lilies.

One of the great things about Echinacea is that even after the flowers have faded and the petals have dropped, the plant still offers a unique and interesting beauty. The seed heads that remain on the plant can be just as captivating as the flowers themselves, and can add an interesting texture to floral arrangements.

When cut in the peak of the season, Echinacea seed heads can last for weeks, providing long-lasting interest to your arrangements. But even if cut in the winter months when the plant has gone dormant, the seed heads can still be just as beautiful. The brown and gold tones can add warmth and depth to winter arrangements, and the spiky texture can add interest and structure. So don't be afraid to experiment with Echinacea in all seasons and in all stages of growth.

When it comes to arranging Echinacea in a vase, it's important to use a clean and sharp pair of scissors or floral shears to prevent damaging the stem. I also recommend changing the water in your vase every few days to keep the flowers fresh and hydrated. With proper care, Echinacea can last up to two weeks in a vase.

In summary, Echinacea is a versatile and beautiful flower that can add a unique touch to any floral arrangement. Whether used alone or in combination with other flowers, it adds texture, color, and height to any design. So go ahead and experiment, and see what beautiful arrangements you can create using this wonderful plant!
